Hemorrhoids

Dec 29, 2023 | News

Hemorrhoids are a health problem that affects many people. Although it is an uncomfortable topic to discuss, it is important to know and understand it in order to deal with it properly.

What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are swollen veins in the rectum and anus area. These veins are normally found inside the anus or lower rectum, but can become inflamed and cause discomfort when pressure is exerted on them.

This pressure can be the result of various factors, such as constipation, pregnancy, obesity or even spending long periods of time sitting on the toilet.

Hemorrhoids can vary in size and severity. Some people may experience mild symptoms, such as itching or discomfort, while others may experience more severe symptoms, such as severe pain, bleeding or visible lumps in the anal area.

It is important to note that hemorrhoids are not a condition exclusive to older people or to any particular gender. Anyone can develop hemorrhoids at some point in their lives, although it is more common in people over the age of 50.

To alleviate the symptoms of hemorrhoids, measures can be taken such as maintaining good anal hygiene, avoiding excessive straining during bowel movements, increasing fiber intake in the diet, drinking enough water, exercising regularly and avoiding sitting for long periods of time.

In more severe cases, it may be necessary to resort to medical treatments, such as the application of topical creams or ointments, sitz baths with warm water, sclerotherapy (injection of a solution to reduce the size of hemorrhoids) or even surgery in extreme cases.

Causes of its appearance

Hemorrhoids can be caused by several factors. One of the main causes is excessive straining during bowel movements, as in the case of people suffering from chronic constipation.

Another common factor is pregnancy, as weight gain and pressure from the uterus can contribute to vein inflammation. Likewise, a sedentary lifestyle and prolonged sitting on the toilet can also be triggers for hemorrhoids.

In addition to the aforementioned factors, there are other lesser known but equally relevant causes. For example, excessive consumption of spicy foods can irritate the lining of the intestine and increase the risk of developing hemorrhoids. Similarly, excessive consumption of alcohol and caffeine can contribute to the dilation of veins and the appearance of hemorrhoids.

Another less known cause is genetic predisposition. Some people have a greater tendency to develop hemorrhoids due to hereditary factors. This means that if any of your close relatives have had hemorrhoids, you may also be at an increased risk for hemorrhoids.

In addition to these causes, it is important to note that aging can also increase the risk of developing hemorrhoids. As we age, the body’s tissues weaken and veins can become more prone to inflammation and hemorrhoid formation.

Most common symptoms

Symptoms of hemorrhoids can vary, depending on the type and severity of hemorrhoids. Some common symptoms include:

  • Pain or discomfort in the anal area
  • Bleeding during bowel movements
  • Itching or irritation in the anal area
  • Swelling around the anus
  • Mucous secretion

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis.

Types of hemorrhoids

There are two main types of hemorrhoids: internal and external.

Interns

Internal hemorrhoids are found inside the rectum and usually do not cause discomfort or pain. They may bleed during bowel movements and, in some cases, may protrude from the anus, known as prolapse.

External

External hemorrhoids are located under the skin around the anus. They can be painful and cause significant discomfort. They often present as swollen bumps that are tender to the touch.

Tips to prevent its occurrence

Although it is not always possible to prevent the onset of hemorrhoids, there are some measures that can be taken to reduce the risk. These tips include:

  1. Maintain a diet rich in fiber to avoid constipation.
  2. Drink enough water to stay hydrated and facilitate digestion.
  3. Maintain good anal hygiene to prevent infections.
  4. Avoid excessive straining when defecating.
  5. Do not remain seated on the toilet for long periods of time.
  6. Maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly.

How do we treat hemorrhoids at Estudio Aequus?

At Estudio Aequus we offer several treatments for hemorrhoids that are tailored to the individual needs of each patient. Our approach is based on conservative treatment, which includes lifestyle changes and non-surgical measures to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life.

These measures may include dietary changes, increased physical activity, use of topical medications and relaxation techniques.

In more severe cases or when conservative treatments are not effective, we may recommend more invasive options, such as rubber band ligation or sclerotherapy.

These procedures are performed in the office and are relatively quick and safe. The decision of which treatment to follow will depend on the severity of the hemorrhoids and the patient’s preferences.

In Estudio Aequus, in addition to hemorrhoids, we are experts in other fields of physiotherapy, such as urogynecological physiotherapy or postpartum physiotherapy. If you would like more information about our services, please contact us or visit our clinic. We are waiting for you!
